What documents to keep in car at all times?

Keep only the documents you may need to show during a traffic stop, after a crash, or when handling a roadside issue. That usually means proof you’re allowed to drive, proof the vehicle is registered, and proof it’s insured. Everything else is best stored securely at home or in a digital wallet to reduce the damage if your car is stolen.

Must-have documents to keep in the car

Vehicle registration (or registration card): This proves the car is legally registered. Many states expect it to be in the vehicle.

Proof of insurance: Keep the current insurance card. If your insurer offers a digital card and your state accepts it, you can keep a paper backup anyway in case your phone is dead.

Documents to keep on your person (not in the car)

Driver’s license: It’s required when driving, but it should stay in your wallet—not in the glove box—so you still have ID if the vehicle is stolen or impounded.

Health insurance card (optional): Helpful in emergencies, but carrying it on your person is safer than leaving it in the car.

Accident info sheet: A one-page checklist with steps, emergency contacts, and what to collect (photos, witness names). Keep it with a pen.

Medical info card: Allergies, medications, and an emergency contact. A simple card is often more useful than a stack of papers.

Roadside assistance details: Membership number and phone line, printed for quick access.

What not to keep in your car

Avoid storing your Social Security card, passport, birth certificate, title, or large bundles of financial paperwork. Those increase identity-theft risk and are rarely needed on the road.
