Dry, scaly facial skin usually improves when you focus on two things: repairing your moisture barrier and minimizing anything that strips it. Our team recommends a simple routine for 1–2 weeks, then you can add extras back in once the flakes and tightness calm down.
Use a mild, non-stripping cleanser and lukewarm water. If your skin is actively flaky, skip morning cleansing and just rinse, then moisturize—over-cleansing can keep scales coming back.
Apply a barrier-supporting moisturizer within a minute of washing to lock in water. Look for a formula with humectants (like glycerin or hyaluronic acid) plus barrier lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids). If the flakes are stubborn, layer a richer cream on top.
At night, press a thin layer of an occlusive balm over scaly patches (around the nose, cheeks, or chin). This “seal” reduces water loss overnight and helps soften rough texture by morning without needing harsh scrubs.
Take a short break from exfoliating acids, retinoids, peeling masks, and gritty scrubs. Also avoid hot showers, fragranced products, and alcohol-heavy toners on the face. When your skin feels comfortable again, reintroduce actives slowly—every other night or less.
Dryness worsens with sun and wind exposure. Use a hydrating sunscreen daily and add a moisturizer underneath if your face feels tight. If indoor air is dry, a humidifier at night can help support your routine.

Moisturize, wait a few minutes, then apply a thin, hydrating base layer before makeup. Use a damp sponge and press (don’t drag) product onto the skin to avoid lifting flakes.
