Dry, flaky facial skin usually comes from a few everyday factors that quietly weaken the skin barrier. When the barrier can’t hold onto water well, skin feels tight, looks dull, and sheds in visible flakes—often around the nose, mouth, cheeks, and forehead.
Furnaces, space heaters, and air conditioning pull moisture from the air. Over time, that drier environment can increase water loss from the skin, making flakes more noticeable—particularly in winter or in rooms where you sleep with heat running.
Frequent washing, hot water, foaming cleansers, and products with strong surfactants or alcohol can strip natural oils. Overuse of exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs, or acne treatments can also trigger peeling and sensitivity when the routine outpaces your skin’s ability to recover.
Hot water can dissolve skin lipids that help seal in hydration. Pair that with friction from washcloths or vigorous towel drying, and you can end up with irritation plus flaking—sometimes mistaken for “just dryness” when it’s partly inflammation.
If moisturizer isn’t applied while skin is still slightly damp, hydration can evaporate before it’s sealed in. Lightweight lotions may also fall short for very dry skin, especially at night when transepidermal water loss increases.
Fragrance, essential oils, certain sunscreens or makeup, and even laundry fragrance on pillowcases can aggravate facial dryness. Flaking can also overlap with conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or eczema, which may need a different approach than “more moisturizer.”

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturize immediately after washing, and add an occlusive layer at night if needed. Reduce exfoliants/actives for a week, switch to lukewarm water, and consider a humidifier to support the skin barrier.
