Suede does not usually break easily with normal wear, but it is more vulnerable to moisture, abrasion, and staining than smooth leather. Because suede has a soft, textured surface, it can show scuffs and wear sooner, especially on shoes worn frequently or in rough conditions.
That does not mean you have to save suede for special occasions. With sensible care and a little attention to where you wear it, suede footwear can remain comfortable and attractive over time.
Friction is one of the main culprits. Repeated rubbing against pavement, pedals, or furniture can flatten the nap—the fine fibers that give suede its characteristic finish. Heavy scraping can damage the surface more deeply.
Water can also leave marks or change the texture as suede dries. Mud, oil, and other spills may be difficult to remove, while excessive heat can dry out the leather. The soles and seams of a shoe can wear independently of the suede upper, so the material alone does not determine how long a pair will last.
We recommend treating clean, dry suede with a protective spray labeled for suede before wearing it. Follow the product directions, test it on an inconspicuous area first, and reapply as directed. Protection helps repel moisture and stains, but it does not make suede waterproof.
For everyday care, let dirt dry before gently brushing it away with a suede brush. Use a suede eraser on small dry marks, working lightly to avoid damaging the nap. For oil stains or extensive discoloration, our team recommends a professional leather cleaner rather than aggressive scrubbing.
Blot excess water with a clean, absorbent cloth without rubbing. Let the shoes air-dry naturally, away from radiators, direct heat, and strong sunlight. Once dry, gently brush the surface to help restore its texture.
Rotate your shoes between wears and avoid using suede footwear in heavy rain or deep mud. For more styling and care tips, read our guide to Calvin Klein men’s suede lace-up shoes.
You can wear suede shoes regularly, but rotating them with another pair gives them time to dry and can reduce accumulated wear. Choose another material for heavy rain or muddy conditions.
