How to Make Faux Leather Look Shiny Without Damage

How do you make faux leather look shiny?

Start with a clean surface, then add shine with a product made for faux leather or other synthetic materials. Dirt and residue can dull the finish, so our team recommends cleaning before you reach for a conditioner or polish.

Clean the surface first

Wipe the faux leather with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. If it needs more than a quick wipe, use a small amount of mild soap in water, then go over the area again with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap. Dry it with a separate soft cloth and let it air-dry fully before applying another product. Pay attention to seams and creases, where residue can collect.

Add shine without leaving a sticky coating

Choose a shine spray or polish whose label says it is suitable for faux leather, PU, or synthetic leather. Test it on an inconspicuous spot first, especially if the item has a matte, textured, or colored finish. Apply a small amount according to the product directions, using a soft cloth if needed, and buff gently. You can add another light application if the finish still looks dull; a heavy layer is more likely to look uneven or attract dust.

If you want a quick refresh, buffing clean, dry faux leather with a microfiber cloth may be enough. It can bring out the finish that is already there, but it will not turn a matte material into a glossy one. For boots, focus on the smooth upper and keep shine products off soles and other areas where they could make the surface slippery.

Keep the finish looking good

Skip acetone, harsh solvents, abrasive scrubbers, and direct heat. These can damage the surface rather than improve its shine. Traditional leather oils and conditioners may also sit on top of faux leather instead of soaking in, leaving it greasy. Between applications, wipe away dust and store your item away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat. FAQ

Can you use regular leather polish on faux leather?

Only use it if the label specifically says it is suitable for faux leather or synthetic materials. Otherwise, choose a synthetic-safe polish and test a small hidden area before treating the whole item.
